Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

1 JOHN 3:18

•Do you generally think of yourself as a generous person? Why or why not? How often do you put conditions on your willingness to give or, like me sometimes, justify not giving at all? Is this the kind of person you want to be? Better still, is this the kind of person God wants you to be?

•What inspires you most about Dolly’s generosity and willingness to forgive others? Why? How can you follow her example in your life today? Who do you need to forgive in order to obey God and to move on in your life? Don’t put it off—call them, visit them, write them right now!

Listen to Dolly sing “Daddy Was an Old Time Preacher Man,” a song she says was inspired by her “fire and brimstone” preaching Pentecostal maternal grandfather. Then answer the following questions.

•How does Dolly describe this “Old Time Preacher Man,” based on her own grandfather, Reverend Jake Owens? What impact do you think growing up in the church (and having a preacher for her grandpa!) had on Dolly? On her attitudes toward giving and forgiving?

•What experiences with organized religion, the church, or a minister from your own life came to mind as you listened to this song? What impact have they had on your faith today?

Dear God,

You are so gracious and generous to me—thank you! I’m so grateful for the many blessings in my life and acknowledge you as the source of all I have. I am your steward and want to share with others so that they might know you and your love. Help me to be like Dolly, who gives so generously and always with a cheerful heart. Give me strength to forgive the people who hurt me or seek to cause harm against me. Remind me that just as you forgive me, I can forgive them.
